Eating Disorders – Binge Eating Is Increasing

Binge Eating No Comments »

In the last few years the medical community has finally begun to recognize that just like bulimia and anorexia, bingeing is also an eating disorder. Yet we are all aware of what a person does when they are bulimic or anorexic, but very few actually under the implications relating to eating disorders like binge eating. Where as with the other two a person will either not eat sufficient amounts of food, or will eat food and then try to purge it from their body as soon as possible. With binge eating these problems are simply not there and so it is a completely different kind of eating disorder compared to the others.

In fact it is because the person seems to be eating that many people often do not realize that the sufferer is actually having a problem. In fact for many what they see is that they have the choice about what food they eat as well as having control over their bodies.

Although with bingeing a person is eating even if large amounts on an irregular basis they do not realize that they are actually placing their health at risk. In fact just as if they choose to starve or purge their body through vomiting or taking laxatives they are still placing strain on their body in the same way.

Those people who choose to constantly eat large amounts of food will then place a considerable amount of strain on to their digestive system and their body. In a large number cases those who tend to binge eat find that they are more prone to weight gain and in some cases will be extremely unhealthy.

One of the biggest problems that those that binge eaters have is actually recognizing that they have a problem in the first place. In many cases a binge eater will hide the problem by either eating more food in secret or by consuming far more food than they should really. The reason why they do this is simply because they feel they have control over their life and the situation they are in.

In fact in most cases of eating disorders today the biggest challenge a person will face suffer from these conditions is actually failing to recognize that they have a problem. Simply because they fail to recognize that they have no control over what they are doing in their lives.

Yes we all over eat at some time in our lives, but this is completely different from binge eating. Where as eating something you enjoy a little more than usual at Christmas or when on holiday is considered normal. For a binge eater they will often have little or no control over just how much food they eat, over what they eat or when they eat it.

When it comes to binge eating weight gain is likely to occur, yet the thing which can prevent a further from improving their situation is the psychological problems associated with it. In fact with eating disorders, like binge eating a person will not be able to change their ways simply because they are not able to accept that they have a problem in the first place. In fact they feel that they have the choice and it is their decision to eat in the way they are.

Are the So Called Experts Who Treat Compulsive Overeating Actually Making It Worse?

Eating Disorders No Comments »

I’m not going to make friends with my colleagues by saying this but I believe that the experts who work in residential treatment facilities or those involved with OA are doing more damage than good when it comes to helping people heal compulsive overeating.

Could it be possible that the traditional methods of treatment are causing a compulsive overeater to remain one forever? They put their clients on a strict diet immediately and use punishments as a way of conformity. They use diversion to get around triggers that set off binge cycles and it’s been this way for decades.

Let’s look at the Twelve Step Program approach that Overeaters Anonymous (OA) uses for their compulsive overeaters. It is the same program base as the AA program which requires complete abstinence however because we need food to survive they modify that to be a highly restrictive food diet.

One of the consequences of not following the OA diet is having your sponsor treat you like a five year old. You are sent to the corner of the room and you can only come out when you behave yourself and start following the rules. I’ve seen this happen. Unfortunately, I don’t think they understand that food is not the main issue for binge eaters.

By having to constantly repeat that you are a compulsive overeater, in the eyes of OA, you will always be one. They do not believe that you can be completely free of this disorder. What if their way of thinking is just years and years worth of the same old beliefs that have never been challenged? What would all the people who are in OA do if they found out it those beliefs weren’t true?

Now I’ll use a residential treatment facility as the next example. Residential treatment facilities do the same kind of food restriction, often times prescribing anti-depressants and having clients stay for 30-60 days at a time. They do “Talk Therapy” but I have yet to see them hold classes on becoming assertive and dealing with stress so that when the client is released back into the wild they can fend for themselves without falling back into the same trap they were in before.

So what if all the old ways of thinking are just that…old?

Now let’s say we taught clients how to reduce stress and use facts without emotions to see the real situations in front of them. What if we taught them how to make the brain want to achieve more by using small chunky goals that helped raise self esteem and self worth? How would they feel if we used positive means instead of resistance to completely heal compulsive overeating? Wouldn’t that be a better way of thinking?

We could send a message to the world that compulsive overeating is no longer a disorder you must live with forever.

I am reminded of when my dad had a heart attack a couple of years back. It was the old way versus the new way of thinking for us and we immediately chose what we thought would be the best for my dad. It came down to two cardiologists. One had graduated in 1968 and had a ton of experience and the other had graduated in 1990 with obviously less experience but specialized in the latest technology which meant my dad could have the heart catheterization procedure with minimal pain and not have to have open heart surgery.

So as you can see new ways of thinking versus old experiences may be the way to go!

5 Negatives Of NES And Arm Fat

Eating Disorders No Comments »

Night eating syndrome is a huge obstacle for women wishing to lose arm fat ASAP. What exactly is it? A state in which you have an excess of food late at night. And late night buffets translate into gargantuan increases in arm fat.

Now I strongly believe that in this day and age more women are suffering from night eating syndrome than ever before. Why? Because we have become so busy that breakfast has become a thing of the past.

And without the breakfast of a king, you’re going to eat way too much once night time rolls around. Not a good scenario if you want to lose arm fat ASAP

Now here are 5 reasons why NES (night eating syndrome) leads to excess arm fat:

1. Too much muscle loss. Cortisol is at an all time high right when you wake up. And this hormone loves to eat muscle so that you can have energy. Unfortunately, skipping breakfast allows cortisol to keep on rising. And don’t forget that less muscle will have you burning less calories.

2. Higher levels of insulin resistance. A little known fact, skipping breakfast alters your levels of insulin for the entire day! So if you skip breakfast, expect a higher percentage of calories going to arm fat cells

3. Negative mental states. Skip breakfast and your mood will be lower than it could be. Multiple research studies have shown that people who eat early in the day have much higher levels of mental positivity.

4. Unnecessary arm fat gain. Your body naturally shuts down as the day progresses. And when you’re sleeping, your active tissues absorb calories at half their normal rate. So if you have a giant meal sitting in your stomach when you fall asleep, guess where it goes? To your arm fat cells!

5. Lethargy. Without all the extra energy you get from early day feedings, you’re more likely to suffer from energy lulls. And if you have less energy you’re probably not going to move around as much. This translates into less calories burned.

If you’re serious about getting rid of arm fat, you have to start eating breakfast. And don’t skip lunch either. Not only will you accelerate arm toning, but you’ll also be in a much better mood during the day. So why not increase your quality of life and never skip breakfast again?

Author Katherine Crawford, a Harvard fitness expert and recent flabby arms refugee, instructs women on how to get rid of arm fat. Learn how to get sexy and toned arms by visiting her blog about how to tone arms now!
