Anorexia has been described as a disease of the 21st century, yet today it is not always diagnosed correctly.

Not all thin people are anorexic, and not all people who suffer from anorexia have the classical image of an anorexic.

It is not only about young girls in their teens, it can be adult women, it can be young men, it can even be pre-adolescents.
People with anorexia have a love-hate relationship with food. They are starving themselves and yet many times they are cooking. This doesn’t mean they are not hungry. This means they are applying amazing self-control.

Control is one of their characteristics. And they can be expert manipulators.

Try to imagine what it means to slowly starve yourself when food is available.

Some of the following behavior patterns can be present in an anorexic:

* Severe Dieting
* Hyperactivity, including compulsive exercise.
* Perfectionism
* Inability to make decisions
* Hunger denial
* Thoughts centered around food, weight and body image.
* Avoiding responsibilities
* Reduction of sexual or intimate relationships.

To complicate matters these types of behavior can be, and many times are, present in people who do not suffer from anorexia.

Therefore a diagnosis is a must so that the appropriate treatment is taken.

One additional thought. Usually one or perhaps a few close friends, are aware that there is a problem and suspect anorexia.
