Overcoming binge eating can be very difficult without help. It is a more serious problem than people realise and is as a result often overlooked in favour of conditions that are perceived to be more serious. However, binge eating or comfort eating can have a serious affect on your health and lead to serious medical conditions.

Binge eating episodes are associated with a number of different situations, often referred to as triggers. If you eat until you feel so full you are uncomfortable or if you eat large amounts when you are not actually physically hungry. Perhaps you eat faster than you ought to or you eat alone through embarrassment or feel depressed and guilty when you have eaten. If you carry out any of these things then you have a problem and should look to try to reshape your habits to combat it.

Binge eating comes about due to distress with certain situations in ones life. There are all sorts of possible causes but you’ll likely have a good handle on what your personal ones are. It can then lead to serious physical problems and particularly heart conditions if not treated properly due to significant weight gain and a poor diet.

It is often a serious problem because people get into a vicious cycle whereby they feel depressed and so turn to food to comfort them and then they begin to feel even worse due to what they are doing. Food becomes their drug and an addiction sets in which causes weight gain, again leading to a lowering of confidence and self esteem which continued to affect your mental state of mind.

Everything needs to be taken on step at a time and the final goal needs to be to eat normally and healthily. It is necessary that you look for help from professionals who can help you to understand what the larger problems are associated with the disorder.

Counselling and talking to friends and family is important. Do not be ashamed of what you are going through, it happens to so many people who do not want to talk about it, yet can lead to far serious problems if not discussed. Take each day at a time and surround yourself with support. Gradually you will get better.
